A Platinum Primer

Platinum is a white metallic element and the most important member of the platinum group metals (iridium, palladium, platinum, rhodium, ruthenium and osmium). It was not until the late 1500's that Spanish explorers of Columbia discovered the metal. They named it "platina", meaning "silver of little value", because they did not know what to do with it. Specimens of the metal were not taken to Europe until the 1700's.

The platinum group metals have several characteristics in common: a silvery-white color, rarity, unusual resistance to chemical corrosion and high melting points. They also, along with with gold and silver, comprise the "noble", or "precious" metals.

Like gold, platinum must be alloyed with other metals to make it suitable for jewelry use. The most popular alloys for jewelry are 90% platinum/10% iridium and 95% platinum/5% ruthenium.

Platinum was the metal of choice in the United States from the turn of the century to the 1940's. During World War II, platinum was declared a strategic metal and its use was banned in all non-military applications, including jewelry. White gold became the "white metal" of choice and its popularity soared to fill the gap.

After the War, platinum slowly regained its popularity. Today, the American public has once again discovered this elegant, modern and timeless precious metal.

Features and Benefits

PLATINUM IS PURE

Most platinum is 90% - 95% pure platinum whereas 18K gold is 75% pure gold and 14K gold is 58.5% pure gold.

Platinum is perfect for those who prefer more of Mother Nature's natural white metal.

PLATINUM IS RARE

Ten tons of ore and eight weeks are required to produce just one ounce of platinum. All the platinum ever mined could fit into the average sized living room.

Platinum is a unique metal for a unique customer.

PLATINUM IS STRONG

It is one of the world's strongest and most enduring metals. Platinum's strength holds precious gemstones securely in their mountings.

Platinum's extraordinary strength gives you peace of mind knowing that your stone is securely set.

PLATINUM IS FASHIONABLE

You will love how platinum coordinates with your yellow gold. Platinum's natural white color compliments gold's natural yellow shade.

Platinum's distinctive look will update any jewelry wardrobe.

PLATINUM IS A NATURAL WHITE METAL

When platinum comes out of the ground, it is naturally a white metal. Compare this to white gold which began yellow but has had alloys added to it to make it appear white.

Platinum's distinctive white color will always be present. It does not have to be maintained over the years to appear white.

PLATINUM IS HEAVY

pT900 (90% platinum 10% other metals) weighs 60% more than 14 karat gold. A six inch cube of platinum weighs 165 pounds.

Platinum feels good to the touch. It makes you feel special and you can actually feel the richness of platinum's weight.

PLATINUM IS DENSE

Its special physical makeup means that platinum will not wear away like other metals. When platinum is scratched, there is very little loss of platinum, unlike other metals.

Platinum needs less upkeep than other metals because it wears better; platinum prongs need less maintenance over the years.

PLATINUM IS DURABLE

Some of the world's greatest treasures, like the Hope Diamond, are set in platinum to last throughout generations.

Platinum holds your precious stones in place so that your platinum treasures transform into family heirlooms.

PLATINUM IS DISTINCTIVE

Platinum's look is different from silver or white gold. All three are white metals; all three are different. Platinum has a rich, distinctive tone all its own.

Platinum makes people look twice, earning you compliments, the chance to show off your jewelry and be able to tell your friends all about platinum.

PLATINUM IS HYPOALLERGENIC

It will not cause an allergic reaction like alloys in other precious metals sometimes do. Platinum also does not tarnish and will not react with chlorine.

Platinum's purity makes it the perfect choice if you have allergies or wish to wear your jewelry all the time without fear of discolorment.
